What is acne?

Acne, pimples, zits: The condition comes with many names and forms, all of which are caused by oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells that get trapped in your pores and manifest as red bumps, whiteheads, and blackheads.

Acne can appear on any part of your body, but it’s most common on the face, back, and chest. While most people think of acne as an inconvenience of their teenage years, it can flare up in adulthood, too.

Acne can appear as a result of stress, hormonal changes (like puberty), wearing greasy makeup, or taking certain medications.

How does laser acne treatment work?

Remarkably, laser treatments can help even the most serious cases of acne. Sometimes, simply washing your face isn’t enough to defeat hormonal or genetic cases of acne, and a laser is aggressive enough to reduce or eliminate redness and scarring.

Luminary MD offers acne treatment with the Lightpod Neo™ laser, which targets and kills the bacteria that cause severe acne. It also promotes the production of collagen, a regenerative protein in your skin that gives it structure.

Even if you don’t have an active case of acne, laser acne treatments can reduce the appearance of leftover acne scars from your youth.

While lasers are generally effective in reducing acne, the results vary from person to person and it can take some time to see the full results.

Is laser acne treatment safe?

Laser acne treatment is generally considered safe, but you might experience a few side effects following a session. These include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • A burning or stinging sensation
  • Blisters
  • Skin color changes

If your side effects are severe or last beyond a day after your treatment, call Dr. Milanes as soon as possible. Your chances of negative side effects can be decreased by following his instructions for aftercare closely and staying out of the sunlight.

If your acne or scars from it won’t go away with rigorous skin care, you may benefit from laser acne treatment. Call or schedule an appointment online at Luminary MD to find out if laser acne treatments can help you.
